Important and interesting information about the separate collection and recycling of packaging
How do you know what should be sorted where?
The quickest way to find out how is to look for the sorting mark on the package. If you are not sure what the symbol means, you will find the answers here on the companies' websites:

Plastic
Plastic packaging is the plastic in which food and other products are packed. The most important task of plastic packaging is to protect the product so that it reaches from the manufacturer to the commercial networks and our homes undamaged.
Plastic products are not sorted together with plastic packaging. If you buy, for example, a plastic toothbrush, the packaging is sorted as plastic packaging and/or paper depending on the material it is made of. You dispose of the toothbrush itself in the residual waste.
Plastic packaging is ready for sorting when it is emptied of residues. It is not a problem if there is a thin layer of grease left on the package.
Steps to follow while sorting:
- Leaves of food that cannot be consumed are sorted under organic (food) waste.
- Rinse the package with cold water and wash with a dish sponge if necessary. The bottles can be filled with water and shaken.
- Shake the package to dry or let it dry a little. The remaining water in the package can cause mold formation and add unnecessary weight to the carrying and transportation of the waste.
- Sort into the yellow bins.
If there is a lot of food left in the package that you cannot dispose of, dispose of the package in the residual waste.
Packaging that is made up of different materials, such as plastic and paper or plastic and aluminum, cannot be recycled together with plastic packaging. If it is easy to separate the materials from each other, for example, the paper and plastic from a bread bag, you can sort the paper and plastic separately. If it is difficult to separate the materials from each other, for example, a bag of chips, dispose of the packaging in the residual waste.
Remove paper that comes off easily, such as the paper around the meat package. If there is a lot of paper on top of the plastic, there is a risk that machines at the recycling plant will read the packaging as paper and reject the product in the sorting process. The labels stuck on the packaging can be left on.
Bio-based plastics are sorted as plastic packaging, while biodegradable and compostable plastics go into residual waste.
Paper
Everything from newspapers and magazines to advertising and writing paper is recycled as paper. So are cartons, cartons, and beverage cartons.
What steps you should follow when sorting the paper:
- Remove any food debris, metal spirals, plastic elements, styrofoam, or solids from the paper/cardboard.
- Please fold the paper, box, or carton to take up as little space as possible in the container.
- Sort into the blue bins.
Dispose of soiled and wet paper in the residual waste. Water degrades the quality of the paper and creates problems in its recycling. The longer the paper is wet, the more the paper fibers wear down and there is a risk of bacteria growth. Keep the paper inside until collection from the waste to avoid getting the paper wet from the rain.
Plastic-coated paper is disposed of in the residual waste. It is really difficult and energy-intensive to separate paper and plastic, so this type of paper cannot be recycled with current technology.
Beverage boxes have a plastic and/or aluminum coating on the inside. However, they are sorted with the paper. They need to be emptied, rinsed, and allowed to dry before sorting. The cap can stay on.
Products and packaging to sort as paper waste:
Paperback books, newspapers, paper bags, cereal boxes, biscuit boxes, pizza boxes, toys, small or large electrical appliances, milk boxes, juice boxes, creamer, etc.
What you should not sort with paper waste:
Paper with food residue, wet paper, paper packaging with plastic or other material elements, baking paper, and soiled packaging.
Glass
Glass packaging that contains food, drink, or other household goods must be emptied of residue before being sorted for recycling.
Do not sort fragile glass, porcelain, and ceramic products together with glass packaging. They have a different composition and can damage the recycling of the glass packaging. Broken glass, porcelain, and ceramic items are thrown away with the residual waste.
Also, glass containers are great for reuse. You could reuse the jars for:
- Storage of food, spices, homemade winter meat.
- Freezing food and leftovers
- Practical storage, such as a pencil case or for old batteries
The glass package is ready for sorting when:
- Cleaned of residue - empty any residue and rinse the pack with cold water. If the residue is difficult to remove, you can leave the package soaked in water.
- You leave the package to dry.
- Sort and place loosely in a green container.
You can leave the label on the glass package when you sort it. The packaging is dry-washed using a hot air process when it arrives at the recycling facility. This causes the adhesive to loosen and the labels to fall off.
You do not need to put the cap back on the package after you have rinsed the glass package. It is easier for machines in a recycling plant to separate metal and glass when the lid is not screwed on.
